Program Director: Andrea Heiss

Arts Journalism: Key Concepts of the Renaissance

The Missouri School of Journalism's Florence Program offers students the opportunity to experience a city renowned for its artistic vision and cultural heritage.

The director of the Missouri School of Journalism’s Arts Program, Dr. Andrea Heiss, will teach one of two three-credit courses and provide faculty guidance. The second course may be selected by the student and is offered by CAPA International Education in Florence; topics range from Italian film photojournalism to fashion and history.

In addition to excursions to Siena and San Gimignano, Dr. Heiss will accompany interested students to Rome for a visit to the Vatican and a tour of the Sistine Chapel. Classes will be held at the CAPA Florence Program Institute in central Florence.

Area

A World Heritage Site and birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence is the capital of Tuscany and a thriving fashion and business center as well as the home of some of the world’s top art museums.  As the epicenter of some of the most creative minds in history, such as Michaelangelo, Dante, Leonardo da Vinci, and Galileo, Florence is the ideal place to develop an appreciation for the ideas and attitudes that defined the spirit of the Renaissance.

Eligibility

Journalism and Arts and Sciences students with a minimum 3.0 GPA are eligible to participate in this program. All students must be in good academic standing and be in their second semester of their sophomore year to apply.

Course Credit

Students will earn six credit hours on this program.  Non-journalism students will earn six hours of upper-level social science or humanities credit; Journalism students will earn six hours of upper-level journalism elective credit (JOURN 4050). While courses will be instructed at the CAPA Florence Program Institute, students are awarded University of Missouri credit. Both courses are graded and will apply to students’ GPA at the University of Missouri.

The following is a list of CAPA courses you can choose from. Go to the CAPA Florence Program page to see full course descriptions. Students may review the list of CAPA courses and should rank their top 3 choices; confirmation on courses will be determined at a later date.

Costs

The Missouri School of Journalism attempts to make the costs of studying abroad affordable for you. Generally, study abroad experiences cost a bit more than a summer semester completed on-campus at MU. However, a summer abroad includes new experiences, cultures, languages, and an opportunity to explore the world as an international student. It is highly recommended that students outline a budget that considers what they might spend during the program. Students on this program pay MU educational fees (6 credits) as though taking classes on campus for the summer. Other expenses to consider for this program include international airfare, personal transportation while abroad, mandatory health insurance, and other miscellaneous personal expenses. Housing is included in the program fee.
Please note that there are scholarships and other financial options available to you to help make study abroad part of your college experience. Students participating in summer programs abroad should contact the Financial Aid office (11 Jesse Hall) to determine whether existing scholarships or grants apply to summer terms.

CAPA Scholarships

CAPA offers both need-based and merit scholarships, and the deadline is February 20. Need-based scholarships are either for $1000 or $500, and merit-based scholarships are for $500. Check out the sites to learn about eligibility and how to apply.
