Host Institution: Charles University
In the 14th century of medieval Europe, creating a university required more than the desire to learn and to teach others. In the case of Charles University, it took the issuing of an official decree by the Pope of the Holy Roman Empire.
Throughout its turbulent history, Charles University has continued to provide an atmosphere of academic excellence for its students. Now, with a student body of more than 40,000, Charles University is continuing to grow and offer its resources to students around the world.

Area
In the heart of Europe, straddling the border between east and west, students and tourists alike will find what many have called the "Golden City." The capital of the Czech Republic, Prague has a history as rich as any city in the world. First settled by Germanic and Celtic tribes in 4,000 B.C., the area was soon populated by Slavs from the surrounding area. Slowly establishing the area around the Vltava River, the largest in the Czech Republic, the inhabitants of the vicinity fell under control of the Moravian Empire. The following centuries brought more development to the area, and in the 9th century Christianity was introduced to its inhabitants. |
What was the best part of your study abroad experience?
"Real-world experience in a different country." Tai-Kwan Yoo, Prague – Summer 2007 |
True prosperity came to Prague in its "Golden Age" under the control of Charles IV, who became the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in 1355. This rise in power brought Prague to the seat of the Empire, becoming its capitol soon after the enthronement of Charles IV. It is during this period of affluence that the construction of many historical buildings and structures began. Though World War II brought widespread devastation throughout Europe, the infallibility of Prague proved to be lasting quality as the city was spared the fate experienced in many major cities, leaving much of the history intact for modern day visitors.
