Seoul, South Korea International Media Conference – June 22-24, 2012
Program Director: Amy McCombs Host University: Yonsei University
The Missouri School of Journalism's Korea Program offers Missouri Journalism students a unique program of study, a network of colleagues, faculty guidance and the opportunity to demonstrate their multimedia journalism skills while covering an international conference held by the East-West Center in Seoul, South Korea. The theme of this year's conference is "Networked News: How New Media is Shaping Stories in Asia and the Pacific." |
|
Before arrival in Korea, students will prepare for the trip in a four-week session on campus that will look at news and journalism issues in Korea with a focus on New Media. In preparation for the trip, faculty and speakers from media, government and academia will address important issues in the country such as its history, culture and economy and share their expertise. Students will expand their understanding of the economic/geopolitical issues in Asia and the Pacific and identify multiple-platform projects that could produce content for Global Journalist and other local media.
In Seoul, students will serve as the conference news staff and produce daily content for East-West and work on individual projects. The conference may include a trip to the DMZ, the heavily fortified zone that has divided North Korea and South Korea since 1953. Students will have opportunities to meet Missouri School of Journalism alumni working in Korea, to visit international business and cultural sites and to build professional networks and discuss current news and media issues with newsmakers and experts. The experience in South Korea, often called the “most wired nation in the world,” provides an ideal venue because of its dynamic media, leadership and innovation in IT, economic success and its growing role on the global stage. The conference will be held at Yonsei University.
