About the Brussels Internship Program
Brussels, the self-styled capital of Europe, is one of the most exciting and challenging cities on earth for journalists interested in international reporting. It houses the headquarters of both the European Union and NATO and lies at the crossroads of London, Paris, Amsterdam and Frankfurt. The EU has grown dramatically in recent years, from 12 members in 1993 to 27 today. The EU has also gained new economic powers and the bloc is gradually beginning to punch its weight on the world stage. It is now the world's biggest economy, trading bloc and donor of development aid. Standards set in Brussels for the environment, agriculture and industry rapidly become world standards. No one can ignore the EU anymore. Brussels, home to the world's largest international press corps, is rapidly becoming the world's other capital, alongside Washington D.C. For a journalist, this makes it the place to be in Europe. Students participating in this program will work at various media outlets throughout the European capital. The program is facilitated by an onsite director who also instructs journalism courses on the program. In addition to a professional project or internship, the curriculum includes seminars in international journalism and a culture course. |

Area
A city of just over one million people, Brussels is a large metropolis that is continuously evolving. As the "Capital of Europe," the city draws people from all parts of the world. The city is a collection of neighborhoods, each with a distinct flavor. The mix of people, ideas, and traditions has created an exciting and vibrant feel to the city and resulted in an extraordinarily eclectic mix of cultures. There is world-class shopping along Avenue Louise, bohemian arts in the Saint-Gilles neighborhood, massive government complexes in the European Quarter, and famous architecture throughout the ornate city. As a transportation hub, Brussels is easily accessible. The city boasts a major international airport as well as high-speed rail service that connects Brussels to many major cities throughout Europe. Transportation within the city is equally accessible. The metro system is clean and efficient, but many find that the city's charm and winding streets call for a more pedestrian mode of transport.
Students will discover Brussels through its world famous food. Chocolates, mussels, and frites are only the beginning. Without question, Brussels is a truly international city. It is a perfect setting to explore the fascinating history and current goings on of Belgium and of Europe.

Internship or Professional Project Students will undertake an internship in Brussels for the length of the program. Participants are placed in professional journalism and media outlets with the assistance of the Program Director. Applicants are encouraged to view the placement process as a job search. While placement at specific outlets or companies cannot be guaranteed, students will complete internships or professional projects at high-caliber organizations which maintain strong affiliations with the Missouri School of Journalism. Applicants should compose a well-constructed resume and cover letter and resume for use in the professional placement process. Students should also consider developing a portfolio to provide, if requested. Applicants should be thorough when completing the internship questionnaire provided below. This is a vital step in determining timelines and deadlines for internship application. Graduate students interested in the Brussels program should set up a meeting with Fritz Cropp. |
