Japan (Tokyo) Spring Semester Exchange Program
Waseda University
- Deadline for Spring 2013 Application: Monday, October 1, 2012
Journalism students participating in this exchange program will take classes at Waseda University's School of Culture, Media and Society which will apply towards a Journalism degree. In addition to the journalism curriculum, students will complete Japanese language coursework. Because of the difference in academic calendars, the program is available for the spring semester only, and maintains a schedule that begins in mid-spring and concludes in late summer. While courses will be instructed in English, students will be required to arrive in Tokyo in February for intensive language training prior to the start of the semester at Waseda.
Studying at Waseda allows students to explore Tokyo while exercising their Japanese language skills. Although some courses will be instructed in English, other classes are not. Students will better their language skills while experiencing the culture and system of journalism in Japan.
Waseda University is consistently ranked among the most prestigious universities in Japan. Located in the Shinjuku, in the northern part of Tokyo, the campus Waseda maintains a tradition of academic excellence which dates to 1882. Alumnus of the university includes six former Prime Ministers of Japan, noted authors and journalists, and business leaders from top companies throughout the world. The campus is also rich in arts and athletics, and offers students all of the cultural and professional opportunities of Tokyo.
Area
The population of greater Tokyo numbers well over 35 million and sits at the core of the most densely populated urban area in the world. Divided into many distinct neighborhoods, the culture and geography of the metropolitan area is as diverse and vibrant as those who occupy it. Students can spend time among ancient temples in Adachi, navigating towering skyscrapers and the colorful nightlife of Shinjuku, or strolling among the fashionable shops of Shibuya. Transportation in Japan is efficient and comprehensive, allowing students the opportunity to truly discover the riches of Tokyo and beyond.
Eligibility
Students with a minimum of 3.0 GPA who are admitted to their sequence are eligible for admission to a study abroad exchange program. All students must be in good academic standing. Applicants to this program must have a sufficient command and understanding of the host language. Typically, students participating in this program have had two advanced-level courses in Japanese.
Course Credit
For each semester of academic work completed abroad, students may earn between 12 and 15 credit hours. Of that, up to nine hours of coursework can apply as Journalism Elective credit hours. Credit for completed courses transfers to the University of Missouri, and grades appear on students' MU transcripts, but are not calculated into their University of Missouri GPAs.
Although students will receive credit for successfully completed courses, all applicants must work with their academic advisors to determine how courses completed abroad will fulfill specific degree requirements. As part of the application process, students will submit a list of courses which they plan to complete. Those courses will then be evaluated by International Admissions. Finally, students must meet with their academic advisors to obtain pre-approval for the courses they wish to take.

Costs
The Missouri School of Journalism attempts to make the costs of studying abroad affordable for you. Generally, study abroad experiences cost a bit more than a standard semester completed on-campus at MU. However, a semester abroad includes new experiences, cultures, languages, and an opportunity to explore the world as an international student. It is highly recommended that students outline a budget that considers what they might spend during a semester at MU and compare it to study abroad costs. Often times, students find that the costs of studying abroad are less than they might expect. Because this is an exchange program, students pay MU educational fees (12 credits) as though taking classes on campus for the semester. Additionally, students are assessed a $500 MU Study Abroad fee which is applied toward costs associated with orientation programs, administration, and staff assistance. Other expenses to consider for this program include international airfare, personal transportation while abroad, mandatory health insurance, on-site housing costs, and other miscellaneous personal expenses.
Please note that there are scholarships and other financial options available to you to help make study abroad part of your college experience!
