The Barcelona Program allows students the opportunity to live in the unique fashion and cultural epicenter of Spain as they complete an intensive internship with one of several major media organizations as their day-to-day job. Students will work a minimum of 30 hours per week, or four full days.
Spanish language (2100 or higher) is required for participation in this program.
While placements at particular organizations cannot be guaranteed, Program Director Carolina Escudero will match participants according to their individual interests and skill-sets. Students should treat this internship matching process as an official job-search, complete with resume and interview.
Participants will also complete a cultural course provided by the esteemed University of Barcelona, which will teach students about the history of Barcelona, Catalonia, and Spain. Students will also be enrolled in a journalism seminar course taught by Director Escudero on-site, which will include lectures by her as well as special guests. Students may also take an additional course in Women's and Gender Studies, again taught by Director Escudero.
A local phone number is REQUIRED for this program. Information about obtaining a local phone number for your program country will be covered in orientations.

While students intern, they will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture of Barcelona while enjoying sunny days intertwined with cool breezes from the Balearic Sea. A robust, walkable city with a metropolitan population of more than 4.5 million people, the city is a fashion stronghold; multiple suburbs offer access to some of the top designers in the world.
This ancient city has grown from its Roman beginnings to boast some of the most unique architecture on the continent whilst keeping remnants of its past; it is common to see modern, realist buildings standing next to medieval structures. Every student should spend a day lost in the narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter before visiting Antoni Gaudi's La Sagrada Família.
Trains from the city will take students wherever they want to go within Spain, and quick flights will get travelers out of the country to France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and any number of other locations within half a day. However, the sheer number of museums, landmarks, and communities, mixed with a vibrant nightlife and friendly people, will likely fill any spare time students might have.

The Missouri School of Journalism attempts to make the costs of studying abroad affordable for you. Generally, study abroad experiences cost a bit more than a summer semester completed on-campus at MU. However, a summer abroad includes new experiences, cultures, languages, and an opportunity to explore the world as an international student. It is highly recommended that students outline a budget that considers what they might spend during the program. Students on this program pay MU educational fees (6 credits) as though taking classes on campus for the summer. The cost of the trip includes international travel, ground transportation, lodging, mandatory insurance, and an MU Study Abroad fee, which is applied toward costs associated with orientation programs, administration, and staff assistance.
