FBI Background Check / Belgium Visa Background Check
NOT required for Summer program participants
An FBI background check / Belgium Visa Background Check covering the last five years is required for all students 18 years of age or older at the start of the Brussels Fall/Spring Internship Program. The background check must be dated within six months of your date of application for the visa and can be obtained from the FBI CJIS Division (Record Request, 1000 Custer Hollow Rd., Clarksburg, WV 26306). Forms and detailed directions on the process can be found here. The background check must also be on tamper proof paper, NOT emailed versions, as noted in the visa application directions.
Due to the lengthy process, it is strongly advised to request your FBI Background Check, directly from the FBI or through an FBI-Approved Channeler (highly recommended) and immediately upon your decision to apply to the Brussels Internship Program.
It is YOUR responsibility to understand and meet the requirements for your visa. Directions can be found here. Submit copies of your FBI Background Check request together with application materials to the Global Programs Office. Failure to submit correct forms may cause delays in the processing of the visa. Consequently, delays will directly affect participation in the program. (Note: Applications may be turned in to meet the application deadline, together with a letter stating the process to request the required background check has begun. Please include a copy of your request and note in the letter, the date the background check was requested.)
If you are aware of anything which the FBI background check will find, it is your responsibility to meet with your study abroad advisor immediately.
Students participating in a semester long Brussels Internship Program will need to complete additional steps to secure a Belgian visa. This process will require the student to schedule and attend an in-person interview with the Belgian Consulate in either New York City, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, or Atlanta. You will be provided more information on this process after you are accepted into the program.
