Help us tell one of the greatest stories in Africa. Travel to South Africa this summer to capture the Nelson Mandela story. Many of his contemporaries are aging, and our goal is to tell as many of their stories as possible. Our work will contribute to a larger effort by the University of Missouri, the University of Western Cape, and the Robben Island Museum to capture the Mandela story in digital form. Our trip will encompass multiple locations in and around Cape Town that serve a role in telling the Mandela story. The program may also include an optional visit to Kruger Park.
Cape Town, home to 3.7 million people, is described as a “cultural mash up” because of its vast history of immigration to the area. The people of Cape Town are proud of their diverse city.
History
Dutch traders founded Cape Town in 1652. However, much of the Dutch population immigrated north after the English seized the Cape of Good Hope in 1806, and subsequently established a British rule over the region. The discovery of gold and diamonds sparked massive immigration to the country during this time, which continues to be seen in the diverse population of South Africa.
In 1948, the National Party implemented an apartheid policy, which favored the white minority population over the black majority. In response, the African National Congress (ANC) was formed and many of its leaders, like Nelson Mandela, spent years in South African prisons combatting the injustice. The apartheid system ended in 1994 with the first multi-racial election.
Recreation
In Cape Town, there is no shortage of activities. The city is a great fit for anyone who likes to be outside with hiking trails, beaches, and other countless opportunities. The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway is a favorite, offering views of the city, the Helderberg mountains, Bloubergstrand, Sunset Beach, Devil’s Peak, the 12 Apostles, Camps Bay, Robben Island, Signal Hill and Lion’s Head, and the Cape Town Stadium. Visiting the Apartheid and South African Jewish Museums are also recommended.

Program participation offers you three hours of upper-level journalism specialty area credit. Classes will begin on-campus during the weeks prior to departure. Classes will be graded A-F
Undergraduate applicants with a minimum GPA of 3.0 who have completed either J4200 (Principles of Strategic Communication) or J4180 (Newsroom Content Creation). Applicants who will complete one of these courses in the semester/term preceding the term for which they are applying will be considered for conditional acceptance to the program.
All students must be in good academic standing. If an applicant has a GPA below a 3.0, a letter of appeal should be included with their application.
Applicants should compose a well-constructed resume and cover letter highlighting technical skills for use in the professional placement process. Students should also consider developing a portfolio to provide, if requested.

The Missouri School of Journalism attempts to make the costs of studying abroad affordable for you. Generally, study abroad experiences cost a bit more than a summer semester completed on-campus at MU. However, a summer abroad includes new experiences, cultures, languages, and an opportunity to explore the world as an international student. It is highly recommended that students outline a budget that considers what they might spend during the program. Students on this program pay MU educational fees (6 credits) as though taking classes on campus for the summer. The cost of the trip includes international travel, ground transportation, lodging, mandatory insurance, and an MU Study Abroad fee, which is applied toward costs associated with orientation programs, administration, and staff assistance.
