Exercise your interest in exploring and explaining other cultures by participating in a journalism short course in one of the world’s most beautiful and accessible cities - Florence, Italy. The program will begin in Rome with a one-week cultural immersion course through Tuscany, and it will continue for 3 weeks in Florence.
The course will focus on daily field reporting, presentation and publication of content focused on arts, culture and society in Italy. Individualized assignments will work with the existing strengths and interests of the students on the program while expanding their skill set. Areas of interest could include: local artists and artisans, modern cinema, gardens, poetry and prose, food, architecture, science, environment, fashion, sport, neighborhood allegiances, historical public relations, contemporary advertising, etc. The program will utilize an authentic approach to each assignment, allowing students to produce deeper, more character- and plot-driven content that goes beyond the normal tourist facade and touches on the "real" face of the community.
The class will meet at least 3 times in Columbia prior to departure. Times to be determined.

A World Heritage Site and birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence is the capital of Tuscany and a thriving fashion and business center. Florence is also the home of some of the world’s top art museums. As the epicenter of some of the most creative minds in history, such as Michelangelo, Dante, Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo, Florence is the ideal place to develop an appreciation for the ideas and attitudes that defined the spirit of the Renaissance.
Students will earn six upper-level credit hours on this program.
- Non-journalism students will earn three hours of upper-level social science or humanities credit.
- Journalism students will earn three hours of upper-level journalism elective credit and three hours of upper-level social science or humanities credit.

The Missouri School of Journalism attempts to make the costs of studying abroad affordable for you. Generally, study abroad experiences cost a bit more than a summer semester completed on-campus at MU. However, a summer abroad includes new experiences, cultures, languages, and an opportunity to explore the world as an international student. It is highly recommended that students outline a budget that considers what they might spend during the program. Students on this program pay MU educational fees (6 credits) as though taking classes on campus for the summer. The cost of the trip includes international travel, ground transportation, lodging, mandatory insurance, and an MU Study Abroad fee, which is applied toward costs associated with orientation programs, administration, and staff assistance.
