What did your experience teach you about yourself or about the industry?
I learned what it was like to work at a big publication (Cosmopolitan) and get an idea of what a career path designing and art directing for magazines might look like. In hindsight, I was very fortunate to work on such a large art team — since then they are all much smaller now — but having mentors that allowed me to work on a variety of projects made it possible to hit the ground running at my first magazine job after graduation.
What was the most valuable experience you gained from the NY Program?
The opportunity to meet with anyone in the industry who would give me 15 minutes of their time was huge for me. I was able to get great feedback on my work, insights about the industry and build relationships that have led me to new jobs and freelance work since then.
Why did you choose this program over others offered by the journalism school?
I had a magazine internship in the city lined up already, so in addition from facilitating my housing and school credits, the New York program allowed me to be within arms reach of major magazine brands and take advantage of industry happy hours and speaking events.
