Tokyo Travel Industry on the Brink How quickly do you think Japan’s tourism industry can recover? Strat comm-ers, what strategies could Japan employ to increase tourism and restore it’s image as a tourist destination? One of the best perks of studying abroad is being able to see amazing sights throughout the world. Every semester, the J-schoolers that we send across the globe to live and study capture some of these sights and experiences in pictures. Each Friday, we’ll be sharing with you a picture that caught our eyes, attention and interest. Enjoy this week’s Photo of the Week!
Summertime in Columbia has always been a time of transition for the Missouri School of Journalism with some students heading back to their hometowns, some sticking around for summer-term classes and some completing internships around the country or around the world.
This summer, MU Journalism Abroad is sending over 80 students to several cities across the globe including London, Buenos Aires, New York and Brussels. These students will be immersed in foreign cultures, take classes at our partner universities and complete internships with a variety of worldwide organizations such as the following: Brussels:
As the J-School’s study abroad office, we like to stay up-to-date on travel and world news. We are, therefore, introducing a new blog feature “What We’re Reading.” On Mondays, we’ll be sharing with you what we think are the most interesting, helpful or the most entertaining travel articles that we’ve found over the past week. We hope you enjoy learning about the happenings around the world as much as we do!
This week, we came across a story about man in Wales who recently bought two tickets to board a train: one for himself and one for his horse. The unlikely pair made it all the way onto the platform before the train’s conductor put a damper on their travel plans by refusing to let the horse onboard. Apparently, this train was not the Pony Express. Click here to check out the full story: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43093376/ns/travel-news/weeblylink_new_window by Danny Matteson
As a sports fan, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t at least a little bit jealous of junior strategic communications major Daniel James’ experiences at his internship this past semester. James, who interned as a marketing research assistant for ESPN in London received the opportunity to attend an FA Cup semi-final soccer match between Stoke City and Bolton FC at Wembley Stadium and to attend an NBA exhibition game at London’s 02 Arena. On top of that, he went to both for FREE after receiving the tickets as a gift from his boss. James found the atmosphere of a soccer match at, arguably the world’s most famous soccer arena, to be unlike anything he had encountered in the U.S. "The atmosphere was incredible. There is nothing like an English football atmosphere in the US,” James said, “Wembley Stadium was also incredible…it was a real treat to see what it looked like in person.” James believes he wouldn’t have had the opportunity to attend such an important soccer match or visit Wembley Stadium if he hadn’t made the choice to study abroad. “My internship has really made it possible to see great sports that I wouldn't have been able to see otherwise," he said. All perks aside, James did learn something about himself and his goals during his internship in London. He is now considering a career in the world of sports. "My career aspirations before I went on this trip were leading me toward a life as an account manager at an advertising agency. After the trip, I could easily see my life as an advertising or marketing representative for a sports team or league. I have even looked into becoming a sports agent. Only time will tell, but a career in sports would be fantastic." He said. In April, MU Journalism Abroad held a photo contest asking students who have previously or are currently studying abroad to submit pictures of students working in their internships abroad. Congratulations to Melissa Klauda who submitted the following winning photo and was awarded a $100 scholarship by MU Journalism Abroad for the winning submission! MU Journalism Abroad would also like to congratulate Elisa Day, Kylie Tutko, Anna Smylie, and Caitlin Alexander whose photos (below) were selected as finalists in the photo contest. Thank you to all students who submitted photos for the contest!
